In 2019, Alan Collier (JD '90) was asked by president Jim Gash if he would move to Accra, Ghana to help pioneer the work of the Sudreau Global Justice Institute in West Africa. He is working in partnership with the US Justice Department, the Legal Aid Commission of Ghana and the Attorney General's Office to improve access to justice for the indigent in Ghana who are accused of crimes ("the vulnerable accused"), focusing on establishing plea bargaining and public defender programs as well as running Justice Clinics in the Prisons. Recently, he has also been asked by the two most populous States of Nigeria to assist in improving their justice systems through training in plea bargaining with one asking us to help them restructure their Ministry of Justice to better serve their citizens. The goal for West Africa is to assist in creating sustainable laws and programs to increase access to justice throughout the whole region.
